Luawanna Hallstrom Named 2008 Farmer of the Year

ESCONDIDO, CA - The San Diego County Farm Bureau recently named Luawanna Hallstrom its 2008 Farmer of the Year, and the guest of honor will celebrate the event with Luawanna Hallstromher family, friends and the agriculture community at a special evening reception Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.

Hallstrom, who is an SDCFB board member, Chief Operating Officer of her family's 3rd generation farm, Harry Singh & Sons, and Business Manager for the family's produce marketing company, Oceanside Produce, has pressed tirelessly for comprehensive immigration reform with countless members of Congress, state officials and legislators for more than two decades. She is a member of numerous local, state and national boards, committees and organizations in an effort to educate and collaborate with high-ranking and influential representatives in the pursuit of meaningful reform, including the AgJOBS bill. She continues to focus on agriculture's contribution to issues of education, environment, health, human rights, international good will. Her work includes supporting legislation that promotes sustaining agriculture, immigration reform, food safety and a secure domestic food supply for the nation.

"It takes a team to accomplish these kinds of challenges, and Luawanna is a very important part of that," said California Farm Bureau Federation President Doug Mosebar. "It strikes me how she has a very calm demeanor about her that really helps disarm people in difficult situations, especially on the emotional topic of labor and immigration. Luawanna's calming influence makes her a great representative of our organization and agriculture in general."

San Diego County Farm Bureau is a nonprofit trade organization with more than 7,000 members. It has operated since 1913 with the mission to represent San Diego County Agriculture through public relations, education and public policy advocacy in order to promote the economic viability of agriculture balanced with appropriate management of natural resources.
